Blog 7 - Stepping out of my comfort zone

The book that I read for my out of comfort zone book is American Spy. The book in a quick general summary without spoiling is framed as a letter from the narrator Marie Mitchell to her twin sons. After there was an assassination attempt on Marie she sends her sons to her mother in the Caribbean where they can stay safe. The novel goes back and forth in time, alternating between Marie's younger years in New York in the 1960s, her career as an FBI agent in the late 80s, and her retreat to Martinique in 1992. The book is out of my comfort zone due to me being not a very open reader. I tend to stick towards nonfiction and sci-fi genre books as they interest me more than mystery books. However, reading American Spy was fairly interesting for me, as I read through the book I couldn't help myself but continue reading as I was hooked. I'm not easily interested in books like these but the way the story is panned out was amazing, it gave me this kind of jump reading through some of...

Blog 6 - Genre Reflection

An overview of my genre- The genre that I chose was nonfiction. My comfort is more towards nonfiction books so that's why I chose it. There are several sub-genres to nonfiction, and each one has it's own appeal to many different people. Nonfiction in general is a genre using facts, people, real events put into books to give information to the general public and anyone who reads them. The appeals of my genre- There are many appeals to nonfiction, many various people read the many different sub genres. Each one of those appeals to people in their own way, but nonfiction as a whole gives people the appeal of learning new things, it helps people with concentration, and etc. You can become a better reader by reading nonfiction as well, you learn new words every once in a while as you read. What I personally like about my genre- I enjoy reading nonfiction as a way to relax. There are several books that I enjoy reading again from time to time to give myself a refresher on facts...

Blog 5 - Acting on a Recommendation

Image
The book I had been reading in the past month is the book Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX and the Quest for a Fantastic Future by Ashlee Vance. It was recommended to me by Matthew Vasquez a while ago and I thought I would put that recommendation to good use for this unit. It was recommended to me a long time ago when we were still looking for independent reading books to read, but I waited off on it until this unit. I asked my mom to order it for me at the start if April and it arrived about a week later and I began to read. While reading the book I learned about Elon Musk's life and important lessons in life that he used. Starting off with his childhood Elon had a rough time, his brother and him were bullied during their time in South Africa which leads to one of the lessons of life the book provides, which is "Get used to pain and suffering". Although he had troubles during his childhood, Musk was always an opportunist, always finding and seizing opportunities. Which is anot...

Blog 4 - Book Club Book Choice

Me and my book club chose the book Ready Player One, and I was the one to decide the book for the group. We chose the book because it was a fairly modern book that showed what the future of mankind would be like. And also that we enjoyed the movie and wanted to see what the book was like. I think a factor that played a role in us choosing the book was because of the movie, it was one of those situations where we wondered what the book was like compared to the movie and many said that the Ready Player One book is much better than the movie. I thought the book was very good, but it provided a lot of cliches that seemed to make the book too predictable. I'm not saying that made it bad, it just seemed like the book was more or less predictable by the middle of the story. My group members thought the same as well, the book in itself is one big cliche, but we enjoyed it overall and it was a very good read. I believed this book had a pretty strong message on humanity and how we all rely...

Blog 3 - Choice Book review

The book that I read for my free pick was called Neptune's Inferno. I found the book looking for books on the topic of World War 2. From the title, I was interested in reading it since I had a very high interest in reading historical non-fiction or even fiction, but I mostly read non-fiction books. For me, the book was an intense ride on one of the important naval battles of World War 2. It was one of the deciding factors in the Pacific theater apart from Midway that helped the United States gain an offensive advantage on Japan. I think the book was very well done, written by James D. Hornfischer, he provides excellent detailing of the book, there's lots of parts in the book that show the heavy toll of death during the war which is important to show what war was like at the time. For example during the battle of Guadalcanal, it is shown that a lot of men had lost their lives after being sunk by an enemy torpedo, the U.S had lost over hundreds of men during the battle. The boo...

Blog 2 - Books of my life

Books of my Life My favorite book to movie - The Shawshank Redemption              One of the best books I've ever read was this one. I had first watched the movie before I even read the book, but the movie itself was an amazing watch. And then I read the book, and saw such a good semblance of the characters in the movie with the book. Each character was portrayed perfectly by the cast and even the main character Andy Dufresne played by Tim Robbins was amazing. There were some scenes in the book that weren't in the movie but it was overall very good.  Historical Book - The Communist Manifesto Although the Communist Manifesto has some interesting messages, that are geared towards the political standards of society. It's a very good book to read for people who are interested in political theories and such. The book has a lot of messages about communism, it details how it works and what society could be with it. It also ...
